Alstom Transport and CASCO Signal Ltd., one of Alstom’s joint ventures in China, have signed a contract with Shentong, the owner and operator of Shanghai metro network, to supply the first phase of Shanghai metro Line 13 with advanced signaling system. The contract’s total value amounts to $30 million.
According to the terms of the contract, Alstom is in charge of providing equipment and services of ATC subsystem, which is the core of Alstom’s Urbalis solution. Project teams from Alstom and CASCO will execute the project.
Shanghai Metro Line 13’s first phase will be equipped with Alstom’s Urbalis solution, an advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) system that integrates network communications with data transmission by radio. It will significantly increase the capacity of the lines over traditional technology whilst at the same time ensuring optimal safety, flexible operations and heightened passenger comfort.
As an important metro line, running across the city downtown from Northwest to Southeast, Line 13’s first phase is 10 miles in length with 14 stations and 24 metro trains.
In April 2010, Alstom successfully commissioned its Urbalis system for the 22-mile Shanghai Line 10, which was launched for the World Expo. Alstom has also recently put in service the Urbalis solution for the Sao Paulo Line 2 extension, with a contract signed in July 2008 with CMSP, the operator of São Paulo metro, to supply a fully automated system for the Sao Paulo Metro lines 1, 2 and 3.
This signaling system is also being used by the Lausanne Metro Line 2 in Switzerland, Beijing Airport Express Line, Beijing Metro Line 2, Shanghai Line 10 & 12, Singapore’s North-East line and Singapore’s Circle Line, the world’s largest driverless heavy metro line.
