Indiana transit backers push for $2.4B referendum

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana transit officials and a group of business leaders say, despite resistance from Republican leaders, they still plan to lobby the General Assembly to put a referendum before voters within the next two years to fund a $2.4 billion transit plan, Indystar.com reports.

Republicans say that the timing isn't right to ask for tax increases for transit, with a projected $1 billion state budget deficit.
