Winnipeg transit adds external announcement system

Winnipeg Transit is equipping its buses with a new external route destination announcement (ERDA) system. The new system will benefit all transit users by making it easier for customers at bus stops to identify and board the correct bus, according to the agency.

When a bus pulls up to a stop, an automated female voice will announce the bus route number and destination on an external speaker located above the front doors.

Buses purchased since 2008 are equipped with external speakers and capable of providing ERDA announcements. Currently, 170 of 545 buses have been equipped with the new ERDA system, which will activate at all 5,000 bus stops served by Winnipeg Transit.
