Alstom Transport, as member of the “Società di Progetto Metro 5” consortium, signed a contract agreement with the Municipality of Milan, on the extension of Milan’s metro system to the San Siro football stadium.

According to the terms of the agreement, Alstom will supply  the infrastructure, including the electric supply systems, electrical substations, traction systems, intrusion and fire detection systems, tracks and platform screen doors to ensure passenger safety for Milan’s first automatic driverless metro line.

The consortium is composed of Alstom, Astaldi, Ansaldo STS, Ansaldo Breda and the Milan city transport company (ATM). The overall contract for Milan’s new metro line totals $1.1 billion.

In 2006, Alstom signed a contract for $65 million, providing infrastructure and project management respectively, for phase 1 of Milan’s metro line 5 and the project is the most important project underway in the infrastructure sector in Italy.

Milan’s metro line 5 (4 miles, including 10 stops from Garibaldi to San Siro) will be completed before the opening of Expo 2015 (Universal Exposition), hosted by the city of Milan, and run fully underground, representing approximately eight miles in length and crossing the city from Bignami station to San Siro with 19 stations. Its transport capacity will amount to 26 million passengers per year.

The Bignami-Garibaldi line is slated for commercial service in 2013 and ATM, the public transport operator of the city of Milan, will manage the service of metro line 5.
