CATS named safest transit system in N. Carolina

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Bus Operations Division (BOD) and Special Transportation Service (STS) received top honors as the safest transit system in the state. This award, given by the North Carolina Public Transportation Association honors an urban transit system that travels over one million miles a year and has excellent performance in traffic and passenger safety.
STS received top honors as the safest Urban Dial-A-Ride system in the state for the third year in a row. STS buses provided 234,730 rides and traveled 2.8 million miles in FY2010, while maintaining a preventable accident rate of 0.36 per 100,000 miles.
Meanwhile, CATS' BOD buses traveled over 12.8 million miles last year and maintained a preventable accident rate of 0.40 per 100,000 miles. These performance indicators for bus and paratransit services exceeded industry standards.
