Duke offers students eco-living guide, free transit

Incoming freshman at Durham, N.C.-based Duke University will receive a link to a new guide to help them live in an eco-friendly way at the school, which includes info on how to get around campus without using a car.

Many of the first-year students will also receive a hard copy of the "Green Book," printed on recycled paper, as they are distributed by students during Orientation Welcome Week.

Students will find information about dining, recycling, alternative transportation and other aspects of green living. The Green Book also provides information that is useful to students before they arrive on campus, such as a shopping list for a green dorm room and ways to get around Duke and Durham, N.C., without bringing a car to campus.

The students who created the Green Book collaborated with campus offices like Sustainable Duke, Duke Recycles, and Duke Parking and Transportation to develop a comprehensive guide to sustainability resources on campus.

The university also announced that it is offering GoPass, a local and regional bus pass, to all Duke undergraduate, graduate and professional school students, as well as staff and faculty whose offices are on East, West, Central and Medical Center campuses; the American Tobacco Campus; or within one-half mile of the East, West, Central or Medical campuses.

GoPass allows for unlimited rides on DATA, Triangle Transit, Capital Area Transit and C-Tran, the town of Cary, N.C.'s transit service, at no charge.

Duke partnered with Triangle Transit to provide GoPass.
