FTA awards $9M to Fla. for bus maintenance facility

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded a $9 million grant to the Gainesville Regional Transit System (RTS).

The funds will pay for a 30,000-square foot energy-efficient facility. The new facility will replace an aging, overcrowded garage and will be able to provide better maintenance for RTS’s current fleet of 105 buses. Previously, the project received $14.6 million in federal funding.

The overall project, which is expected to create approximately 300 construction jobs, will ultimately include administrative offices and a body shop. The facility, which is set to begin construction in mid-2012, is designed to obtain the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED) Silver Certification.

FTA is providing nearly $39 million for 11 projects in Florida.
