Skanska awarded $347M Calif. rail extension contract

Skanska signed a design-build contract to construct a 10-mile extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District system.

The company is leading a joint venture with Shimmick Construction and Herzog Contracting Corp. Skanska has a 45% share of the contract, which amounts to $347 million. The customer is Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

The project extends the heavy rail rapid transit system to San Jose, Calif. The extension includes two stations, six at-grade crossings and two above grade crossings. The project’s alignment proceeds from Warm Springs Station in Fremont and ends in the city of San Jose.

Work will commence in February 2012 and is planned to be completed in spring 2016.
