CHICAGO — Mass transit supporters proposed state legislation Wednesday that would increase the gas tax in the Chicago region to raise a projected $168 million over five years for the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace, reported the Chicago Tribune. The legislation seeks to index the state motor fuel tax to inflation, with annual adjustments, to ensure a dedicated transit funding source, officials said.
