D.C. gets wheelchair-accessible taxis

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — Accessibility Taxi began operating 15 new ADA-compliant MV-1 taxis, equipped with ramps, 36-by-56-inch doorways and space to accommodate wheelchairs and as many as six riders, The Washington Post reported.

The taxis are operating in Prince George’s County, which lagged behind many other areas of Washington, D.C., in terms of wheelchair-accessible taxi service, a transportation planner told the Post. For the full story, click here.

    Why have the taxi businesses been exempted all these years from offering vehicles capable of transporting a power wheel chair or scooter? They only have to offer this service, if they purchase vans; if they stick to sedans they are allowed to circumvent the intent of the ADA, leaving the bulk of the citizens to rely on public transportation.
