BART marks 40th year of service

SAN FRANCISCO — The Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) marked the 40th anniversary of its opening on Tuesday. In the four decades since it opened, BART has expanded greatly, including adding a link to the San Francisco International Airport.

BART's ridership has also boomed, from about 15,000 trips per weekday in its first year of service in 1972 to 384,000 trips per weekday last month, the busiest in BART's history, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.
