Motorcoach Census: Nearly 700M passenger trips in 2010

The motorcoach industry provided 694 million passenger trips and 76.1 billion passenger miles in 2010, according to the annual Motorcoach Census, a benchmark study commissioned by the ABA Foundation to measure the size and scope of the motorcoach industry in the U.S. and Canada.

“The small business network that makes up the motorcoach industry continues to provide a remarkable level of cost-effective transportation for our nation,” said Peter J. Pantuso, president of the ABA Foundation. “We are proud of the fact that, even in difficult times, our industry continues to change and grow to meet the demands of the traveling public.”

The Motorcoach Census is the only comprehensive data collection focused on the private over-the-road bus industry. The full report and methodology are available and can be used to understand the services provided, size and efficiency of the industry. Below are some selected statistics from the study and a modal passenger comparison.

Modal Passenger Volume Comparison

  • Domestic Airlines – 717 million enplanements (international and domestic enplanements for U.S. airlines).
  • Motorcoach Transportation – 694 million passenger trips (U.S and Canadian passenger trips).
  • Amtrak – 28 million passengers.

Industry of Small Business Serves North America

The 2010 census shows that the motorcoach industry continues to be a small business success story. More than 82% of industry operators own fewer than 10 vehicles.
