NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Transit had 23% of its railcars and 35% of its engines damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. The agency has not determined how many can possibly be repaired, reports Bloomberg BusinessWeek.
The agency will have problems finding new equipment, as 330 unionized production workers went on strike November 1 at the factory that builds the shells for the agency’s cars. The U.S. Federal Transit Administration is speaking with transit agencies in other parts of the country to line up railcars, buses and other equipment and coordinate loans of rolling stock.
