The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is partnering with La Dolce Velo of San Jose in a bicycle giveaway to promote participation in this year’s Bike to Work Day celebration on May 9.

The contest, “Good for you, good for the environment,” can be accessed by going to VTA’s Facebook page: facebook.com/scvta. To enter, a person has to like VTA on Facebook and submit an entry form with a photo of the entrant using VTA, and a short note about why he or she would like to win the bicycle.

“There is a bus stop for VTA lines 22 and 522 right next to our shop. We see the connection every day between bike riding and public transportation,” said La Dolce Velo co-owner Rob Mardell.

Studies show that the number of bicyclists increases during Bike to Work month, and many of those new cyclists continue as a regular practice. VTA and La Dolce Velo are hoping to sweeten these odds through the bike giveaway contest.

The contest runs through May 1. The winner will be announced on May 2.
VTA buses and light rail cars are equipped with bicycle racks, making it convenient to combine bicycle trips with transit trips. Additionally, there are more than 100 automated bike lockers available at 12 light rail stations throughout the county. Coming this fall, VTA will be participating in California’s first-ever, regional bike share program that will make commuting to work or school by bicycle an even more viable travel option.
