D.C. Metro to replace troubled railcars

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Post reported that, according to Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) documents and officials, the agency plans to spend $215 million over the next five years to replace 100 railcars. The cars have had numerous problems with brakes, lights and air conditioning.

The 4000-series railcars would normally have been due for an overhaul. However, Metro told the paper, that would cost about $1.5 million per car. Instead, the agency plans to buy new cars under a contract with Kawaski, which will build its new 7000-series railcar. For the full story, click here.
