Amtrak President George Warrington ordered a 15% reduction in management ranks and may cut train service and further trim the workforce to meet its congressional deadline for breaking even on operations by December 2002, the Washington Post reported. Cuts in union employees of 10% to 15% are also being considered. That would probably result in a reduction of trains, maintenance and onboard services. Amtrak hired consulting firm McKinsey & Co. to advise top management on how to restructure or redesign the corporation if necessary, reported the Post.
