Damage to the No. 1 and 9 subway tunnels and stations in Lower Manhattan is so extensive that the line will need to be completely rebuilt for more than a mile. Rebuilding of the line could take more than two years, New York City Transit officials told The New York Times. The officials declined to estimate the cost but said they expect the money to come from the $20 billion in federal aid that has been pledged to the city in the wake of the World Trade Center attack.
