A 42-year-old man walking along railroad tracks was hit and killed Saturday afternoon by a New Jersey Transit train near a station in South Amboy, N.J.

According to a spokesperson for N.J. Transit, the man was walking along the right-of-way outside the tracks when the engineer saw him suddenly move directly onto the tracks. The engineer put on the emergency brakes but couldn’t stop in time.

The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died two hours later.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the man was trying to commit suicide.
