The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will install 1,000 surveillance cameras and 3,000 motion sensors in its network of subways and commuter rail stations as part of a $212 million security upgrade.
The move, part of the agency’s counter-terrorism program, represents the largest financial contribution the MTA has ever made to upgrade security.
Although the agency approved almost $600 million for security in 2002, it had spent only a fraction of that until this week.
Upgrades to the MTA’s rail infrastructure will be provided by Lockheed Martin Corp.
