The city of Edmonton, Alberta, purchased 26 new Siemens Transportation Systems SD160 light rail transit vehicles (LRVs) per an $84 million contract. The LRVs will be given a new exterior and interior design along with a revised roof construction. In addition, each vehicle will be equipped with a diagnostics system, a passenger information system and an optimized CCTV surveillance system. This two-section, high-floor LRV has a seating capacity for 60 and standing room for 170 passengers. Siemens also plans to expand its Sacramento, Calif., LRV plant and insource its train carshell manufacturing process.
