The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has begun work on a new rail transit standard, IEEE P1698, "Guide for the Calculation of Braking Distances for Rail Transit Vehicles." The methods and assumptions in this guide will encompass automatic train protection and signal system operation, as well as propulsion and brake system operation, environmental conditions, operator interfaces, tolerances and failure modes. IEEE P1698 will help in the design of automatic train protection and signal systems for rail transit vehicles. It also will help with vehicle and train control procurement and maintenance activities. This standard is being sponsored by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
