S.F. Muni installing cameras to enforce cell phone ban

SAN FRANCISCO — Muni will install video cameras on its rail lines to enforce a regulation adopted unanimously by the California Public Utilities Commission last week that prohibits rail transit operators in California from using personal cell phones and other electronic communications devices while on the job. The rule also applies to any employee directly involved in the operation of the rail systems, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The state commission, which regulates California's passenger rail operations, including Muni and BART, put an emergency ban on the books in the fall of 2008 — shortly after a train collision in Los Angeles County killed 25 people and injured more than 100 others. For the full story, click here.
