MBTA mechanics struggle with aging rail equipment

MEDFORD, Mass. — Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) 57 repairers, sheet-metal workers, carpenters and engineers work with a mix of old, new, and jury-rigged technology, replacing components with scrapped parts salvaged from retired Blue Line cars, and protecting traction motors from snowdrifts with hairnets, due to the agency’s financial crisis, Boston.com reported.
