China opens world’s longest HSR line

BEIJING — China opened the world's longest high-speed rail line, at 1,428 miles, according to the Detroit Free Press. The line more than halves the time needed to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China.

While the country has considerable resources invested in its high-speed rail program, it also recently experienced serious problems. Part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, and a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. For the full story, click here.
