BOSTON — A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) study of the rail system’s maintenance backlog sees a spike in cost estimates by an additional $600 million to $7.3 billion — and outlines a funding scenario that would eliminate the backlog in 25 years, the Boston Herald reported.

The report will be presented to the Legislature as it decides how much to allocate to cut down on the backlog. The backlog could be wiped out by 2040 if the T spends $765 million annually on the maintenance backlog — rather than the current $610 million, according to the report.
