National Transit Institute seeks course facilitator

Accepting proposals from qualified professionals to facilitate its three-day Public Involvement in Transportation Decision Making course. The course aims to give transit agencies, planners, transportation specialists, communication professionals and others practical strategies, examples, and tools to address new and existing public involvement efforts in their communities.

U.S. DOT announces $2.4B in high-speed rail funds

A merit-driven process will be used to award the newly available high-speed rail dollars to projects that can deliver public and economic benefits quickly. A project's ability to reduce energy consumption, improve the efficiency of a region's overall transportation network and generate sustained economic activity along the corridor are among the selection criteria.

OLI: Rail crossing collisions rose in 2010

The nonprofit cites FRA statistics, which indicate 2,004 vehicle-train collisions in the U.S. in 2010, up 4.2 percent from the 1,924 incidents in 2009. The collisions resulted in 260 deaths and 810 injuries, with crossing deaths up 5.3 percent and crossing injuries up 9.8 percent.

Fla. DOT: High-speed rail would have made more money

The trains, which were rejected by Gov. Rick Scott, would carry more passengers and operate at a greater financial surplus than projected in a 2009 federal application. Report indicates a $10.24 million surplus from high-speed rail operations in 2016, with ticket revenue of $60.8 million, $12.3 million more than previously predicted.

French Trade Commission visits Florida

The goals for the mission were to better understand Florida's transportation needs, understand how commuter rail and local transit improvements can improve transportation for Floridians, and discover how the visiting French companies can assist.

Amtrak ridership up 16 consecutive months

Factors contributing to the success include a moderately improved economic environment allowing some recovery of business travel along the Northeast Corridor, sustained high gasoline prices, the increased appeal and popularity of rail travel, effective marketing campaigns and the introduction of Wi-Fi on the high-speed Acela Express trains.

NJ Transit unveils ‘Scorecard’ system, requests feedback

A system of metrics is currently in development to provide a baseline for measuring NJ Transit’s performance in the areas of customer service, safety and security, financial health and service accountability. Executive director James Weinstein asked for help from riders, by participating in the first customer survey in April.
