PITTSBURGH — A 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge ruled that the Port Authority of Allegheny County violated the First Amendment rights of the Pittsburgh League of Young Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union when it refused to run ads on its buses telling convicted felons of their voting rights, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The case has cost the authority more than $230,000, based on the agency's response to an ACLU Right to Know request in September 2009. If the agency does not appeal the case further or loses the appeal, it would end up paying the plaintiff's legal costs, which were more than $300,000 at the end of the district court trial, according to the report.
