LOS ANGELES — A funding plan to build, operate and maintain a four-mile streetcar system in downtown Los Angeles for 30 years was approved by a City Council committee Tuesday, reported mynewsLA.com.

According to local officials, the project is "shovel-ready" with $590 million in secured funding. The streetcar could be funded through a combination of federal grants, county Metro funds and local dollars, according to the report.
