NJ Transit continues closing gap on overcrowded trains

NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit is continuing to ease overcrowding on its busy train lines, with the agency expected to add 20 leased railcars from the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), NJ Advance Media reports.

The move is part of a plan introduced by Gov. Phil Murphy in February. To this point, Gov. Murphy’s plan has helped decrease the number of trains without enough cars from 46 to six. The smaller trains are blamed for overcrowding that has passengers standing in aisles and doorways. Excessive amounts of malfunctioning equipment have also been blamed for canceled trains.

An NJ Transit team was in Maryland earlier this week to inspect the cars as a lease was being worked out, according to the report. NJ Transit will swap an old unneeded older locomotive for lease of the cars. For the full story, click here.
