SUZHOU, China — New research shows that up to 375 people die prematurely each year due to exposure to air pollution in the metro system of the Chinese city of Suzhou, according to Chemistry World.

Friction between brakes and train wheels generates airborne pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter in the subway systems, which can cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, the report said.

Scientists monitoring the pollutants found that increasing tunnel humidity could cut the number of related deaths by 20%. Water sprayers in the subway tunnels could be the answer, Chemistry World reported.
