BOSTON — Keolis says it plans to construct new fare gates at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s three busiest stations by next winter, marking what could be a drastic change to how riders flow on and off trains, reported the Boston Herald.

The additions, intended to cut down on estimated $35 million the system loses to fare evaders annually, are expected to be installed by the end of the year or early 2018, the report said.

Per a new revenue-sharing agreement, Keolis would spend up to $10 million upfront, and another $7 million annually for the project, including staffing the new ticketed gates at North Station, South Station and Back Bay Station, which together account for 90 percent of the system’s inbound and outbound traffic, according to the Boston Herald.
