STOCKTON, Calif. — Ronnie Thomas commutes 80 miles from Stockton by bike, bus and train to his job at Stanford University as a dining employee, Peninsula Press reported.

Last year, Thomas moved to Stockton from the Bay Area, where a growing number of low-income workers face the challenge of rising rent and affordable housing options continue to vanish, especially in Silicon Valley where the bulk of the employment opportunities are, the report said.
