DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Money raised by the city’s chapter of the Disabled American Veterans to pay for Tri-Rail trips to VA hospitals spurred a decision by South Florida Regional Transit Authority (Tri-Rail) officials to make the train free for disabled former service members throughout South Florida, Sun Sentinel reported.
The donation also inspired a state senator to propose legislation would offer the complementary service to veterans throughout the state.
The chapter raised $5,000 to buy rail passes for disabled veterans after noticing that many take Tri-Rail to VA hospitals for treatment and presented the money to Tri-Rail during a recent board meeting. The board members voted unanimously to start a program that would make Tri-Rail trips free for all disabled veterans in Broward, Palm and Miami-Dade counties. For the full story, click here.
