Central Maryland Regional Transit (CMRT) was awarded the Transportation Association of Maryland’s (TAM) 2013 Transit System of the Year in its category, as well as Outstanding Program of the Year for its Travel Training Program. CMRT accepted these awards at TAM’s 25th Annual Conference in Cambridge, Md. earlier this month.
CMRT provided 627,841 passenger trips in Fiscal Year 2013 and was recognized for its innovative work in “Connecting the Region, Creating Community” through making transportation more accessible to the residents of the Central Maryland region. This award comes as CMRT continues making great strides in its innovative approach to transportation through a series of improvements to its routes and schedules.
In addition to its bus service, CMRT serves the Central Maryland region through its award winning Travel Training program. The Travel Training program has trained nearly 1,500 human services professionals since its inception in 2011. In FY 2013 alone, the program has trained 752 individuals at 46 different non-profit agencies and schools. These trainings provided human service professionals with the tools they need to teach the individuals they work with how to use public transportation safely and independently.
Founded in 1987 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, CMRT has managed public transportation services in the Baltimore — Washington Corridor for more than two decades. The bus service is “Connecting the Region, Creating Community” through supporting the transit needs of suburban travelers in portions of three counties – Anne Arundel, Howard and Prince George’s, including the City of Laurel.
CMRT is committed to ensuring that no person is excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of its transit services or programs on the basis of race, color or national origin, as protected by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Furthermore, the same assurances apply to discrimination based upon, religion, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status or mental or physical status.
