WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Post published an op-ed piece written by Richard Sarles, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (Metro) GM, on why the transit system’s frequent track maintenance is necessary. He explained that since the system went into service more than three decades ago, maintenance has been delayed at the expense of service.

By 2010, Sarles added, the system deteriorated to the point of having fatal accidents, not meeting federal regulations, and track conditions that required slow-speed restrictions and extra inspections.

Sarles also wrote that because of the track work, Metro has made significant progress, reaching the halfway mark of its multiyear effort to rebuild the system to improve safety and reliability. For the full story, click here.
