ComStar International Inc. has introduced two new retrofit replacement refrigerants for existing A/C systems operating with R410a, R404a, and R507.

The R410a replacement is RS-53 with an ASHRAE designation of R470A. The R404a and R507 replacement is RS-51 with an ASHRAE designation of R470B. Both are reportedly A-1 certified as non-flammable and low-toxicity.

RS-53 (R470A) is a new HFO blend with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 909 and is zero ozone depleting (R410a has a high GWP of 2088). RS-53 has similar energy efficiency and cooling capacity as R410A along with similar discharge pressure and flow rate. No systems component changes are necessary.

RS-51 (R470B) is a HFO blend with a GWP of 717 and is zero ozone depleting (R404a and R507 have a high GWP over 3,900). RS-51 has a 48% lower GWP than its two nearest competitive HFO blends and has similar energy efficiency and cooling capacity — requiring little to no component modifications.

ComStar’s introduction of new, low-GWP retrofit refrigerants for existing systems are designed to fill the void when various states and the U.S. EPA phase out of high-GWP HFC refrigerants. The company manufactures and markets environmentally safe, industrial strength chemical products for the HVACR, indoor air quality, fuel oil, and plumbing industries.

The RS series of HFC and HCFC direct replacement refrigerants for R410a, R22, R502, R404a, R507, and R12 are available worldwide.
