House, Senate passes transportation appropriations

The Conference Committee approved the bill by a vote of 38-1. The House passed the bill 298-121, while the Senate approved it with a vote of 70-30. The bill now heads to the President, who is expected to sign it, thereby completing work on the FY 2012 budget for the Department of Transportation.

2-year transportation bill unanimously passed by EPW

The legislation maintains funding at current levels, reforms the nation's transportation programs to make them more efficient and provides robust assistance for transportation projects under the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program to leverage state, local and private-sector funding, according to the EPW.

Nashville, Tenn. transit CEO honored for accessible system

Paul J. Ballard was awarded for exceptional leadership in providing Nashville with an outstanding accessible transit system at the 30th Annual Awards for Artists with Disabilities. Under his leadership, Nashville MTA’s bus ridership has increased from 6.4 million annual passenger trips to a high of 9.4 million passenger trips. More than 175 new accessible buses and vans have been added to the fleet during his tenure.

Md.’s TransIT drivers awarded for safety, customer service

The Transportation Association of Maryland, an association of rural and urban transportation providers, named two of Frederick, Md.’s TransIT drivers as the 2011 Best in State for both fixed-route and paratransit services. Devin Naylor is Maryland’s “Fixed-Route Driver of the Year” and Tracy Carson is “Paratransit Driver of the Year.”

Toronto Transit redesigns Metropass to help blind riders

The “clipped” edge at the top-left corner of the pass indicates the direction the pass needs to be swiped at a turnstile for smooth, fumble-free entry. The new design was advocated by the Advisory Committee on Accessible Transportation to assist blind and visually impaired transit users.

Fla.’s PSTA adds paratransit contractors

Awarded the five-year contract for wheelchair service to Care Ride Transportation and the five-year deal for ambulatory service to Gulfcoast Yellow Cab. The total value of the two contracts is just less than $21 million over five years.
