AC Transit in Northern California is rolling out its bus rapid transit service on San Pablo Avenue in stages this summer. The first stage, the new line 72R, began operation on June 30. The vehicles will provide faster weekday service between Contra Costa College and downtown Oakland, with frequent trips and fewer stops. Once fully in place, the rapid buses will rely on new technology, such as traffic signal automation, high-tech rider information systems and automated schedule monitoring. New multiple-door, low-floor coaches will help speed up passenger boarding and alighting, and reduce dwell time for the buses in loading zones.
