BOGOTA, Colombia — Frustration over the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system's crowded, deteriorated state sparked a protest by frustrated commuters that grew out of control and erupted into fights between protesters and riot police, AP reported.

The riots came as a surprise to urban planners, since the system has been touted and emulated worldwide. However, the system was initially built to carry about half of the passengers it now handles. For the full story, click here.
