As budgets and funding continue to shrink, demand continues to grow, as does the role public transportation plays in preserving the environment. Appropriately, many transit systems continue to innovate and make their case known, both at the federal and local levels. New York City Transit takes the top spot in this year’s survey.

Advocates to rally to preserve transit nationwide

Public transit systems, businesses, employees, riders and advocates are joining together at rallies around the country on Sept. 20 with a message for Congress: ‘Don’t X Out Public Transit.’ Meanwhile, APTA will hold a panel discussion conference call Sept. 20 with transit leaders and advocates to discuss the impact of the cuts and the national campaign.

Valley Metro adds 17 hybrid-electric buses

Will replace older 30-, 35- and 40-foot buses that run on routes in Tempe, Ariz., and have surpassed their useful life. The fleet was paid for with regional Proposition 400 funds, FTA 5307 formula grant funds specifically allocated for bus fleet replacement and FTA’s Clean Fuels Grant Program, which provided the hybrid propulsion system.

House extends surface transportation bill

While the vote was a result of a bipartisan agreement between Senate and House leaders, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee John Mica (R-FL) said it will be the last temporary extension he will support and that a full four-year funding bill needs to be put into place after this one expires.
