L.A. approves installation of 6,000 bus benches

Public works officials have accused Norman Bench of failing to disclose how much money it had collected from its ads. The city had the option of sharing in that revenue but failed to ask Norman Bench for its financial information until February 2010, which appalled several council members

Washington State U. contracts with Zipcar

Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile applications to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles as well as honk the horn to help locate the vehicle.

U. of Rhode Island hires sustainability officer

Marsha Garcia, the first to hold the newly created position, is emphasizing use of transportation and carpooling. She also is focusing on energy saving projects to reduce carbon emissions and is reviewing curriculum to find opportunities for students to learn about sustainability.

U. of Miss. urging commuters to take the bus

Record enrollment of freshmen, most of whom are required to live on campus, will push other students off-campus, forcing them to commute. University officials are looking for ways to encourage students not to bring their cars to campus and to take the bus instead.
