Every bus in the fleet is supposed to be equipped with a "Next Stop Announcement" feature that gives a visible and audible announcement about upcoming bus stops, but the the announcements sometimes don't play or are too quiet to hear.
Bus drivers say the practice puts passenger safety at risk, because it is "an undue distraction."
The GPS-based system will provide audio and visual stop announcements inside the Denver Regional Transportation District’s nearly 1,000 buses and broadcast route and destination information outside the buses when the doors open at bus stops.
Thirty MTA buses servicing 34th Street in Manhattan will feature next stop announcements. Real-time arrival information will be provided at eight bus shelters.
