Creating Standards in Bus Operations

Those of you who take a few minutes each month to follow my blogs, or have attended one of my past presentations at transit events, first let me thank you. These blogs and presentations, in combination, have been promoting surface transit standards in a form of a standardized curriculum for over 10 years now. I ask you, are we not long overdue in getting transit specific standards a done deal? By the time of this posting, I would have again stood before a group of transit professionals at a recently attended transit function in Orlando, Fla., speaking on this exact topic.

Swedish institute develops new fire suppression standard

The objective has been to construct a model of an engine compartment where stakeholders can evaluate the firefighting performance of different suppression systems in a well-defined and objective way. The new standard SP method 4912, edition 3 has just been published.

Heavy-duty vehicle fuel efficiency standards unveiled

Under the new national program, buses and trucks built in 2014 through 2018 will reduce oil consumption by a projected 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas pollution by approximately 270 million metric tons. The standards are expected to yield an estimated $50 billion in net benefits over the life of model year 2014 to 2018 vehicles.
