Beginning March 21, the City of Altamonte Springs will pay for 20% of all Uber trips that begin and end within city limits. In addition, to encourage SunRail use, the city will subsidize 25% of all trips starting or ending at the Altamonte Springs SunRail station.
Sunrail is meeting its expected ridership on Thursdays and Fridays, but having issues filling cars Monday through Wednesday.
The first phase of SunRail’s 32-mile commuter rail line will connect area residents with downtown Orlando, and will link to Amtrak and LYNX bus service.
The first phase will start running along a major interstate corridor that runs through downtown Orlando on May 1. The system is expected to eventually tie into an extensive public transit network linking Orlando and Miami by a higher-speed rail system.
The project could open the door to passenger-train service between Lake and Orange counties, including a connection to the SunRail commuter line.
The $1 billion, 61.5-mile system, being built by the Florida DOT, will utilize an existing rail corridor. The 32-mile first phase will serve 12 stations and link DeBary, to Sand Lake Road, just south of Orlando. Service is expected to begin in 2014.
The contract is valued at approximately $195 million and includes mobilization activities followed by 10 years of service.
