The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed concern about the completion of transportation projects and security in Athens, Greece, in time for the 2004 Olympics. A proposed light rail line has yet to be built, leaving many to wonder if it will be complete in time for the event. Transport Minister Christos Verelis promised the line would be ready in time even though Athens’ mayor has filed a suit to block the project because of fears it could worsen traffic in some areas. The IOC is also concerned that some holes exist in regard to protecting and monitoring public transportation and sites still not built. Athens security experts have repeatedly pledged to take all necessary measures against terrorism and other possible incidents.
