The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority added the first of two parallel hybrid-powered 40-foot buses, manufactured by New Flyer of America, to its fleet. The 40-foot buses are powered by an advanced parallel hybrid-electric powertrain, the EPSystem (TM), from the Allison Transmission Division of General Motors. Compared to conventional diesel buses, use of the system will reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter emissions. The system also delivers up to 50% better acceleration and improved fuel efficiency.
