A federal transportation bill will provide a combined $40 million to 11 Atlanta-area counties, including about $12 million for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).

The bill also allots $7 million for the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority’s new express bus program for buses and facilities.

Though Congress will consider the Omnibus Appropriations bill next week, U.S. Sens. Zell Miller and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia announced the Atlanta area funds were secured Wednesday.

Part of the MARTA funds will go to an automated fare collection system, bringing Atlanta one step closer to a Smart Card system.
