The GO transit system in the Toronto area of Ontario has received a $720 million contribution in government funding that will go toward 12 projects, including expansion of bus and rail services, station upgrades and construction of storage yards. The funding, which was provided by municipal, provincial and federal governments, is expected to help reduce travel time, increase reliability of transit services and cut down on harmful tailpipe emissions. The GO system carries 44 million passengers a year and serves a population of 5 million people in the greater Toronto area. It's one of the largest transit systems in Canada.
