A proposed BRT (bus rapid transit) system in Virginia Beach, Va., would cost $21.4 million, down from a previous estimate of $33 million, according to a budget released this week.
The state has pledged $10 million for the system, meaning $11.4 million must be raised by local municipalities.
According to HamptonRoads.com, the city’s portion of annual operating costs, after collecting fares and state and federal contributions, would be around $457,500 a year.
In the Virginia Beach plan, 18 buses would stop at 30 stations along six miles.
A hearing will be held April 19, at which time citizens can comment on the BRT plan.
