A controversial proposal to outlaw cameras in subways as a safeguard against terrorism has been dropped by police and New York City Transit (NYCT) officials.

NYCT’s original plan was to forbid photography, videotaping and filming in subway stations, but officials decided this week that the move was unnecessary, according to the New York Daily News.

The proposal had been criticized as too far-reaching by many groups, including the National Press Photographers Association, Radio-Television News Directors Association, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Society of Professional Journalists and New York Press Photographers Association.
